Organised Labour calls off Galamsey strike after assurance from gov't

Accra, Ghana - October 9, 2024 - Organised Labour has called off its nationwide strike against illegal mining, or galamsey, scheduled for October 10, 2024.

The decision follows an emergency meeting on October 9, where union leaders assessed the government's commitment to tackling galamsey.

Joshua Ansah, Secretary General of the Trades Union Congress, explained in a media briefing on Wednesday October 9, 2024 that the suspension allows Labour to monitor the government's implementation of anti-galamsey measures.

The government has intensified Operational Halt, led by the Ghana Armed Forces, to combat illegal mining in forest reserves.

The strike aimed to pressure the government to declare a state of emergency and address galamsey's environmental devastation.

Key unions, including the Public Utility Workers Union and General Agricultural Workers Union, had backed the strike.

However, the Ghana Medical Association and Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association opted out, prioritizing essential healthcare services.
