No need for forensic audit of voter's register, our staff are well-trained and competent - Jean Mensa
Accra, Ghana - October 1, 2024 - The Electoral Commission (EC) has reaffirmed its stance against conducting a forensic audit of the 2024 provisional voter's register, despite mounting pressure from the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
At an Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) meeting, EC Chairperson Jean Mensa cited the Commission's constitutional mandate under Article 45 (a) of the 1992 Constitution, granting authority to oversee and manage Ghana's elections.
Mensa emphasized the EC's track record of delivering credible elections, urging stakeholders to trust the Commission's ability to execute duties fairly and transparently.
The NDC requested the audit, citing concerns over alleged discrepancies in the provisional voter's register.
However, Mensa countered that robust mechanisms ensure accuracy, and the register undergoes ongoing revisions through established processes, including online re-exhibition.
“As a body mandated by Article 45 (a) of the 1992 Constitution to compile the register of voters and to revise it as such periods as determined by law, we urge you all to trust us to perform our functions as enshrined in the constitution," she stated.
“The Commission has a track record and is globally respected for delivering free, fair, credible and transparent elections and electoral processes and this includes the compilation of the provisional voter's register."
“Our staff are well-trained, and have the capacity and the competencies as well as the skills to undertake the task of producing the final and credible voter's register. We certainly do not require external assistance in our line of work,” she added.
