NPP's Kwadwo Asante breaks away to run as independent in Suhum
Suhum, Eastern Region - In a shocking turn of events, incumbent NPP MP Kwadwo Asante, also known as Boafo, has announced his decision to contest the December 7th general election as an independent candidate.
This comes after losing the NPP parliamentary primary to Frank Asiedu Bekoe, popularly known as Protozoa, in January 2024.
Despite efforts by high-ranking NPP officials, including Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and Bryan Acheampong, to persuade him to rescind his decision, Asante declared his intention to run as an independent candidate at a Health Walk event in Suhum Amponsah Market.
Asante's supporters have been pushing for him to contest as an independent candidate, citing his popularity among the constituents. The current MP claims his decision is in response to the call of the masses and that he is the "helper" the constituency needs.
Tensions within the NPP in Suhum Constituency have been brewing since the 2020 general election, with followers of Asante and Protozoa clashing at public events, resulting in violence.
The constituency has a history of political violence, dating back to the 2008 "51/51 battle" between Bryan Acheampong and Frederick Opare Ansah.
Asante has officially launched his campaign, featuring posters and T-shirts with the slogan "Oboafo Toaso" (Oboafo Continue), and has vowed to continue his developmental agenda for Suhum.
