NPP Primaries: Walewale MP withdraws after chaotic election
Walewale, Ghana - In a dramatic turn of events, Lariba Abudu, Member of Parliament for Walewale, has withdrawn from the New Patriotic Party (NPP) primaries in the constituency.
This follows a chaotic election process that was marred by violence and ballot paper snatching.
The Electoral Commission (EC) was forced to annul the primary contest between Abudu and Dr. Kabiru Mahama after a man, identified as Kamara Bawah, grabbed and destroyed ballot papers.
The incident led to a disruption in the sorting and counting process, prompting the EC to nullify the results.
Abudu's withdrawal comes ahead of a National Executive Committee meeting scheduled for today to address the situation and find a solution to unify the party in the constituency.
In an interview on Joy FM's Newsnite after her announcement, the MP said “Why should I hold my party ransom because someone has decided to be a candidate."
During the primaries' re-run yesterday, a man, identified by police identified as Kamara Bawah was detained for causing damage to the ballot papers, and security has been beefed up in Walewale and surrounding areas to maintain order.
In a press release, Mrs Abudu said her decision to pull out is "in the interest of the greater good of the New Patriotic Party (NPP)."
The NPP is yet to comment on Abudu's withdrawal and the way forward for the constituency.
