Mortuary Workers set to embark on strike over unpaid salaries, poor working conditions

Accra, Ghana - September 24, 2024 - The Mortuary Workers Association of Ghana (MOWAG) has announced an indefinite nationwide strike, starting Thursday, September 26, 2024.

This move follows the government's alleged neglect of their long-standing grievances.

MOWAG General Secretary Richard Kofi Jordan stated in a statement dated Tuesday, September 17, 2024 that the strike is a last resort after repeated failed attempts to resolve the issues.

The association cites inadequate provision of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), exposing workers to diseases and hazards, and unpaid salary arrears since 2020 as key concerns.

Additionally, the government has ignored MOWAG's request for financial clearance to employ 500 additional workers and has yet to pay the COVID-19 bonus announced by the President.

The association also draws attention to the alarming rate of mortuary worker deaths, with 16 reported in just one year.

All mortuaries will be closed until the government addresses the workers' grievances. This indefinite strike may cause disruptions in mortuary services nationwide.

MOWAG had previously threatened industrial action in November 2023, garnering public support, including from Ghanaian rapper Sarkodie.

The association now calls on the government to promptly address their concerns to prevent prolonged strike action and ensure the well-being of mortuary workers.
