'Save Efua Sutherland Park' - Family appeals for community action

Accra, Ghana - September 24, 2024 - The Sutherland family has sounded the alarm for the immediate renovation of the Efua Sutherland Park in Accra, Ghana.

Speaking at the 2024 Ghana Garden and Flower Show (GGFS) opening ceremony on Sunday September 22,  Amowi Sutherland-Phillips daughter of Efua Sutherland,  emphasized that spaces like this can no longer be taken for granted.

“It must be clear to everyone that we cannot take spaces like this for granted,” she said.

“The name on the park is only truly meaningful when we give attention to Efua Sutherland’s vision: to secure this space in perpetuity as a measure of Ghana’s dedication to her children for years to come.”

Efua Sutherland's vision for the park was highlighted by her daughter, Amowi, who described it as a vibrant green space deeply rooted in Ghanaian culture and open to everyone.

The park's environmental significance was also underscored, with Amowi envisioning it as a vital lung for the city, showcasing Ghana's natural heritage through an environmentally sensitive design.

“Efua Sutherland’s vision, translated for the 21st century, sees a green, vibrant, culturally grounded, well-managed park which is open to all, and is a destination that we can be justifiably proud of, sitting in the company of many other national heritage markers in this area of Accra,” she said.

“Her vision sees a tree zone which serves as a vital lung of the city, and an environmentally sensitive design showcasing Ghana’s indigenous natural heritage, with representation from all our regions,” she added.

She called for a sustained communal effort to enhance the park, urging everyone involved in the Ghana Garden and Flower Movement and Show to contribute towards this goal. “It is going to take a huge sustained communal effort to bring this space back even better than it was before. Everyone who participates in the GGF Movement and Show in any capacity moves us towards this goal,” Sutherland-Phillips noted.

The Sutherland family expressed gratitude and admiration for all participants of the GGFS, wishing them a successful show.

“The Sutherland family admires and commends you, and we wish you a truly successful show in this coming week,” she added.

With the family's plea, the spotlight is now on the community to come together and breathe new life into this cherished park.
