Minority Blasts Govt over Dumsor Levy Suspension, Calls for Repeal
Alexander Afenyo-Markin is the Minority Leader in Ghana's Parliament.

Accra, Ghana - 16 June, 2025 - The Minority Caucus in Parliament has blasted the government over its decision to indefinitely suspend the implementation of the Dumsor Levy, just days before it was set to take effect.

In a strongly-worded statement signed by the Minority leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin, they described the move as a "shameful retreat" and accused the government of chaotic and inconsistent economic governance.

According to the Minority, the government's justification for the suspension - citing global crude oil price volatility - is hypocritical, given its past criticisms of the Akufo-Addo administration for similar reasoning.

The Minority argued that the government's U-turn on the levy is evidence of poor planning and a lack of stakeholder engagement.

They also called for Parliament to be reconvened to repeal the levy altogether, arguing that it was a bad idea from the start and will only add to the economic burdens of Ghanaians.

They also dismissed government claims that the levy was necessary to stabilize the energy sector, pointing to operational inefficiencies and poor management as the real causes of Ghana's energy woes.

“The Minority categorically repudiates this postponement as wholly inadequate and demands the complete reversal of this policy direction,” the statement said.

“We emphatically call upon the Government to immediately table a repeal bill under certificate of urgency to comprehensively abolish the Energy Sector Levies (Amendment) Act, 2025.”

“At a juncture when Ghanaians are contending with cost-of-living pressures, the introduction of supplementary fuel levies which inevitably affect transportation and food prices requires reconsideration,'' portions of the statement read.
