Media Coalition Against Galamsey joins forces with Organised Labour in nationwide strike

Accra, Ghana - October 9, 2024 - A nationwide "Red Band" protest is set to begin on October 10, 2024, as the Media Coalition Against Galamsey joins forces with Organised Labour's indefinite strike.

The protest aims to push the government to take decisive action against the devastating effects of illegal mining, or galamsey.

Kenneth Ashigbey, Convener of the Media Coalition, explained on the Citi Breakfast Show that the protest seeks to amplify the calls for a ban on galamsey, which has ravaged Ghana's water bodies and forest reserves.

To show support, participants are encouraged to wear red bands on their arms or heads and tie red bands on cars, motorbikes, bicycles, and other vehicles. They are also urged to share photos and videos of their participation on social media using the hashtags #StopGalamseynow, #SaveOurLand, and #SaveOurFuture.

The Media Coalition has called on Ghanaians to continue the protest indefinitely until the government takes concrete steps to halt galamsey and its environmental destruction.
