Majority caucus urges Speaker to reconvene Parliament
Accra, Ghana - October 23, 2024 - The new National Democratic Congress (NDC) Majority Caucus in Ghana's Parliament has formally requested Speaker Alban Bagbin to reconvene the House, citing urgent legislative matters and critical government business.
This move follows Bagbin's indefinite suspension of sittings due to low attendance among Members of Parliament.
Controversy Surrounding Suspension
The suspension has sparked intense debate amidst a parliamentary standoff. The Minority insists on their majority status despite a recent Supreme Court ruling granting a stay of execution on Bagbin's decision to declare four seats vacant.
Urgent Call to Action
In a letter to Bagbin, Second Deputy Majority Whip Alex Tetteh Djornobuah emphasized the recall was made in good faith, prioritizing national interest.
The Majority Caucus warned that prolonged delays would stall important initiatives, undermine public trust, and hinder effective governance.
“We wish to emphasise that this request is made in utmost good faith and in the national interest, to enable the Government to discharge its Constitutional and Democratic obligations to the people of Ghana.
“The matters outlined herein are of pressing importance and require the urgent attention of Parliament.”
They urged the Speaker to recall Parliament within a stipulated 7-day period.
“Considering the constitutional and statutory provisions cited above and in the exercise of our rights as Members of Parliament, we respectfully urge you to summon Parliament for a Meeting within the stipulated seven-day period.”
