Kwasi Appiah temporarily leaves GFA role over conflict of interest

Head coach of Sudan's national team, Kwasi Appiah has temporarily resigned from the Ghana Football Association (GFA) Executive Council following a directive from the Confederation of African Football (CAF).

The decision comes amid concerns of a potential conflict of interest, as Sudan is set to face Ghana in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

CAF cited its statutes and the FIFA Code of Ethics in requesting Appiah's resignation, emphasizing the need to preserve the integrity of the AFCON qualifiers.

"This situation is contrary to the CAF Statutes and the FIFA Code of Ethics.

"For that reason and to preserve the integrity of the AFCON qualifiers, I urge you to take immediate action to resolve this conflict of interest, including, at the minimum, temporarily stepping down from one of the two roles until the conclusion of the competition."

Appiah, who took over as Sudan's coach in 2023, has had a successful stint, guiding the team to four wins in six competitive matches. He now faces his former team, Ghana's Black Stars, on October 10 at the Accra Sports Stadium.

Ghana currently sits third in Group F with one point, following a 1-0 loss to Angola and a 1-1 draw against Niger. Appiah's Sudan side will face Niger before hosting Angola, with the qualifiers concluding in November 2024.
