"Ghana was not founded by Nkrumah alone" - Akufo-Addo

Ghana's President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has flatly rejected the idea that Ghana was founded by a single person.

He made these utterances on Saturday, August 3, in his Founder's Day address to the nation.

The president expressed his disagreement with claims that the countrys first president, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah founded Ghana alone.

He emphasized the collaborative work of numerous persons in the freedom struggle, recognizing that, while Nkrumah's influence is unquestionable, he was not the sole architect of Ghana's independence.

“I speak to you this evening, rejecting completely, the notion that Ghana was founded by one man. While Kwame Nkrumah’s contributions to our independence are undeniable, it is important to acknowledge for ourselves that respect that the struggle for our nation’s freedom was a collective effort spanning several generations,” President Akufo-Addo said.

In 2019, Ghana's Parliament enacted a law, designating August 4 as Founders' Day to commemorate the achievements of all who contributed to the country's fight for independence.

This law also designated September 21 as Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Day, which recognizes Nkrumah's efforts.

The decision to create Founders' Day however, generated complaints from several individuals and groups who believed in Nkrumah's unique role in founding the country.

These critics contend that Nkrumah's leadership was vital and deserves sole credit.
