Ghana to Offer 1,000 Scholarships to West African Tertiary Students - Mahama

Accra, Ghana - 22 April, 2025 - Ghana's President John Dramani Mahama has unveiled a landmark initiative to strengthen West African unity, offering 1,000 scholarships to students across the ECOWAS sub-region to study in Ghanaian universities.

The scholarship programme aims to foster socio-cultural understanding and cooperation among young people in West Africa, promoting a sense of unity and shared identity.

President Mahama emphasized the importance of positioning ECOWAS as a model of integration, dialogue, and peaceful co-existence.

By providing opportunities for students from diverse backgrounds to study together in Ghana, the initiative seeks to break down barriers and build bridges between nations.

The President described the gesture as an act of solidarity, paving the way for a future where young people in West Africa see each other as partners, rather than foreigners.

“Let us position our sub-region not only as a political and economic block but as a diplomatic anchor for the continent, a model of integration, dialogue and peaceful co-existence.

“To mark this moment and strengthen regional bonds, Ghana is offering 1,000 scholarships to tertiary students across the ECOWAS sub-region to study in our universities.

“This is not just a gesture, it is an act of solidarity. It is a bridge to a future where our young people will grow up seeing each other not as foreigners but as partners,” he said at the official launch of the ECOWAS 50th Anniversary in Accra on Tuesday, April 22, 2025.
