Ghana spent $3M on 2023 AFCON campaign - Sports Minister

Accra, Ghana - Ghana's Minister of Youth and Sports, Mustapha Ussif, has disclosed that the country spent a whopping $3 million at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast.

According to him, this significant expenditure covered various costs, including chartered flights, logistics, and per diems for the team.

Ussif shared these details during a briefing to the Parliamentary Select Committee for Sports, Culture, and Tourism, providing insight into the financial aspects of Ghana's participation in the tournament.

"Our team, once they are here and they are going to Cote D’Ivoire, you have to charter a flight and that flight comes at a cost. Apart from you flying all of them in business class, you also have to charter a flight and when they finish, you get a flight to bring them back so those are the cost,'' he stated.

Unfortunately, Ghana's performance in the tournament was underwhelming, failing to secure a single win in three matches, which led to the group stage exit.

The disappointing outcome resulted in the dismissal of Chris Hughton as head coach and paved the way for Otto Addo's appointment as his permanent replacement.
