Ghana Election 2024: EC approves 13 Presidential Candidates

Accra, Ghana - The Electoral Commission (EC) has officially cleared 13 presidential candidates to contest in the upcoming 2024 elections, following a rigorous vetting process.

In a statement issued on Friday, September 20, the EC announced that the approved candidates met the required criteria, including submission of detailed documentation and nomination forms.

Notable candidates include:

- Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia (New Patriotic Party - NPP)
- John Dramani Mahama (National Democratic Congress - NDC)
- Christian Kwabena Andrews (Ghana Union Movement)
- Kofi Akpaloo (Liberal Party of Ghana)
- Hassan Abdulai Ayariga (All People's Congress)

People's National Convention's Bernard Mornah was disqualified, dashing his party's hopes of ending the leadership duopoly in Ghana.

New contenders from smaller parties and independent groups have entered the fray, bringing innovative ideas and a fresh outlook on governance.

The Electoral Commission assured the public of a fair and transparent selection process, rigorous documentation checks, and urged candidates to campaign peacefully.

“Following the successful conduct of the Filing of Nominations from the 9th of September to the 13h of September, 2024, the Commission instituted a thorough examination of the Nomination Forms submitted by the Candidates to ensure conformity with requirements as set out in law,” the statement said.
