Galamsey crisis: PFAG warns of generational food and nutritional crisis
Accra, Ghana - September 10, 2024 - A dire warning has been issued by the Peasant Farmers Association of Ghana (PFAG) as illegal mining, known as 'galamsey', threatens to plunge the country into a generational food and nutrition crisis.
With over 1.2 million hectares of farmland already lost to illegal mining activities, PFAG is urging the government to take immediate action to ban the practice and protect the environment, farmers' livelihoods, and food security.
The Association warns that the cocoa sector and food crop production are being severely impacted, with farmers struggling to access usable water and fertile soil due to pollution from illegal mining.
PFAG emphasizes that the consequences of inaction will be catastrophic, leading to a generational food crisis that will have far-reaching consequences for Ghana's future.
