Bawumia Pins NPP's 2024 Election Defeat on National Cathedral, Fuel Price Hike

Takoradi, Western Region, Ghana - 28 April, 2025 - Former Vice President and 2024 New Patriotic Party (NPP) Flagbearer Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has identified two major factors that contributed to the party's loss in the recent general elections: the controversy surrounding the National Cathedral project and a sharp fuel price increase just before election day.
Speaking at the launch of the NPP's nationwide Thank You Tour in Takoradi, Dr. Bawumia cited the controversy surrounding the incomplete National Cathedral project and a last-minute fuel price hike as the primary reasons for the party's loss.
The National Cathedral project, which had $58 million invested in it without completion, sparked widespread public outrage and eroded trust in the party, according to Dr. Bawumia.
“The National Cathedral we were not able to complete after $58 million was sunk into it caused a lot of rage in the public,” he stated.
He also slammed the timing of the fuel price increase, implemented just three days before the election, saying it angered drivers and voters alike.
“When I heard it, I thought it was a joke. The drivers were angry at us. So, people went to vote against us with anger.
Dr. Bawumia dismissed suggestions that his religious engagements may have contributed to the party's defeat, as suggested by leaked findings of the Mike Oquaye Committee report. Instead, he emphasized that internal investigations confirmed no significant religious or tribal influence in the party's electoral loss.
“I am happy that there is no religious factor and tribal factor that caused our defeat.”
Looking ahead, Dr. Bawumia pledged that under a future NPP administration, youth employment and job creation would be prioritized.
“I assure you that in the next NPP administration, you will be prioritised for jobs,” he added.
The Thank You Tour aims to reconnect the party with its grassroots base and lay the groundwork for a stronger comeback in future elections.
In related news, the NPP's loss has sparked internal debates about the party's strategy and policies. Analysts point out that the party's handling of economic issues, including inflation and unemployment, may have contributed to its defeat. The party's leadership is under pressure to revamp its image and reconnect with voters.
Sources close to the party indicate that the Thank You Tour is a crucial step in this process, allowing the party to engage with its supporters and rebuild momentum for future elections.
