Aston Villa signs Ian Maatesen from Chelsea.
Aston Villa have signed Chelsea left-back Ian Maatsen for £35 million.
Maatsen, 22, spent the second half of last season on loan at Borussia Dortmund, helping the Bundesliga team advance to the Champions League final.
The defender is now with the Netherlands at Euro 2024, where they face Romania in the final 16 on Tuesday.
He is Villa's second summer acquisition, following the arrival of Everton striker Lewis Dobbin. Chelsea signed Maatsen from PSV Eindhoven in 2019.
He impressed throughout loan spells at Charlton Athletic, Coventry City, Burnley, and Borussia Dortmund.
He played a key role in Burnley's promotion to the Premier League in 2022-23, scoring four goals in 39 games and being named Championship Team of the Season.
Maatsen began the previous season at Chelsea but struggled for consistent minutes under Mauricio Pochettino, despite appearing in 15 games across all competitions. A six-month loan to Dortmund was arranged in January after he signed a one-year contract extension until June 2026, which included a release clause that was expected to result in his exit this summer.
During his time in Germany, Maatsen made 23 appearances and scored three goals as Dortmund placed fifth in the Bundesliga and lost 2-0 to Real Madrid in the Champions League final.
He leaves Stamford Bridge having made 16 appearances for the London club.
