Akufo-Addo advocates for Africa's 'voice' in UN Security Council
Ghana's President Nana Akufo-Addo has ignited a global conversation on reforming the United Nations Security Council.
His passionate appeal which underscores the urgent need for inclusive governance was made on Tuesday night at the UN Summit on the Future of the World.
“In its current form, the [Security] Council does not reflect the realities of today’s world. It remains an outdated post-Second World War relic, with Africa, a continent of 1.4 billion people, grossly underrepresented," he stated.
“We cannot speak of multilateralism when the structures of global governance are rooted in an unjust and unequal order. Mr. President, the time for half-measures is over. Bold reforms are needed to ensure that every nation, large or small, rich or poor, has an equal voice at the table," added.
Akufo-Addo, who is also the co-chair of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Advocates, appointed by UN Secretary-General António Guterres is expected to deliver his final address to the United Nations General Assembly in New York on Wednesday September 25, 2024
As a champion of sustainable development, Akufo-Addo's address at the UN General Assembly will focus on:
1. Climate Action: Bold initiatives to protect vulnerable nations.
2. Global Cooperation: Strengthening international partnerships.
3. Africa's Rise: Empowering the continent's economic growth
