Akosombo Dam Spillage: Gov't Seeks Extra GH¢200m
Accra, Ghana - The Ministry of Works and Housing has made a pressing appeal for additional funding to support the ongoing resettlement efforts following the Akosombo Dam spillage.
The initial allocation of GH¢200 million, provided by the government, has proven insufficient to address the scope of the disaster.
Rev. Stephen Yaw Osei, Chief Director of the sector, revealed that an additional GH¢200 million is crucial to cover consultancy fees and land compensation, bringing the total projected cost to GH¢600 million.
The request for supplementary funding was made during a stakeholder engagement on the Dam Spillage, emphasizing the need for urgent support.
The Ministry requires the full amount to complete the resettlement process within a year, a timeline deemed essential for restoring normalcy to the affected communities. The appeal for additional funding underscores the government's commitment to supporting those impacted by the dam's spillage and ensuring their swift resettlement.
“We projected about 600 million cedis to do the project, but currently we have 200 million cedis. So if you have to do it in a year, it means that we need 600 million to be released for the resettlement process,” he stated.
“If it’s going to be two years, that means that we need an additional 200 to make it four so that we can fast-track it and do it in two years. If it is to be three years more, then we need 200 million every year. So we are asking for additional funds if we have to do it in a year. We have the numbers and the prioritised homes to be revealed,” he added.
