453 Blue Water Guards Complete 4-Weeks Training to Combat Galamsey

Ezilibo, Jomoro District, Western Region, Ghana - 14 April, 2025 - Ghana's Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources has completed training 453 personnel under its Blue Water Initiative, aimed at curbing illegal mining activities in the country's major rivers.
The trainees, known as Blue Water Guards, underwent a comprehensive four-week training program at the Ghana Navy Forward Base in Ezilibo, Western Region.
The guards will be deployed to support the Ghana Navy in safeguarding key river bodies, including the Ankobra, Pra, Fia, Tano, and Bonsa Rivers, from the activities of illegal miners, known as galamseyers. They will be stationed at five Naval Operational Bases set up across the river systems to ensure effective surveillance and response.
This initiative is part of the government's efforts to protect the environment and restore Ghana's increasingly polluted water resources. The Blue Water Guard Initiative, launched on March 17, aims to establish round-the-clock monitoring of Ghana's water bodies.
The 453 personnel who completed training are the first batch of a larger deployment target of 2,000 guards. They will work to prevent illegal mining activities and ensure the sustainability of Ghana's water resources. With the deployment scheduled within a week, the government is taking a significant step towards addressing the environmental challenges posed by illegal mining
