UTAG calls off strike
Accra, Ghana, October , 29, 2024 - The University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) has officially suspended its strike action against illegal mining, also known as "galamsey," effective October 29, 2024.
This decision comes after a nationwide vote by UTAG members, who expressed their views on the ongoing crisis.
According to UTAG National President, Professor Mamudu Akudugu, suspending the strike was not an easy decision, considering the importance of the cause.
However, the association recognizes the need to explore alternative legal avenues to address the critical issue of galamsey, which has severe environmental and social impacts across Ghana.
In a statement released on Tuesday, October 29, 2024, UTAG stated that despite calling off the strike, the association remains committed to advocating for effective measures to address the illegal mining crisis.
The association reaffirmed its resolve to continue pressing for meaningful, lasting solutions to protect Ghana's environment and communities.
Background on the Strike
UTAG initiated the industrial action on October 10, 2024, calling on the government to ban mining and prospecting for gold and other minerals in forest reserves, farms, and water bodies.
The strike lasted several weeks before the association decided to suspend it.
