US Olympic Committee Bans Transgender Women from Women's Sports

The United States Olympic & Paralympic Committee (USOPC) has implemented a new policy barring transgender women from competing in women's sports, aligning with an executive order signed by President Donald Trump earlier this year. The policy update requires national sport governing bodies to exclude biological males from female events, ensuring compliance with federal expectations.

This decision affects various sports, including those governed by bodies like World Aquatics and World Athletics, which have already implemented similar bans. The policy change has sparked debate, with some arguing it promotes fair competition for women, while others see it as discriminatory towards transgender athletes.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has taken a different stance, allowing individual sports federations to set their own rules. IOC President-Elect Kirsty Coventry emphasized the need to protect the female category, stating that a task force will be formed to develop a universal policy on gender eligibility.

The USOPC's decision may lead to further litigation and controversy, particularly in light of recent court rulings, such as Caster Semenya's win in the European Court of Human Rights. The policy change has also drawn criticism from LGBTQ+ advocacy groups and athletes, who argue that it erases transgender women from sports.
