University Teachers Threaten Nationwide Strike Over Delayed Book and Research Allowance

Accra, Ghana - 10 June, 2025 - A joint meeting of the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG), the Technical University Teachers Association of Ghana (TUTAG), and the Colleges of Education Teachers Association of Ghana (CETAG) has resolved to take industrial action if the government fails to release the exchange rate for the book and research allowance and commence payment by June 13, 2025.
The unions, which represent lecturers in universities and colleges of education, expressed deep concern over the delay, citing its impact on their members' research and academic work.
According to them, the book and research allowance is a vital component of their Conditions of Service, enabling them to advance knowledge and contribute to the country's development.
The unions' decision follows a meeting held on June 8, 2025, where they unanimously agreed to demand immediate action from the government.
In a statement, they emphasized that any disruption to the academic calendar would be detrimental to the education sector and urged the government to prioritize the welfare of teachers.
''The University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG), the Technical University Teachers Association5 of Ghana (TUTAG), and the Colleges of Education Teachers Association of Ghana(CETAG) wish to express our deep concern and discontent over the undue delay in releasing the exchange rate for the book and research allowance and payment,'' portions of the statement read.
“Despite the late release of the rates.we have resolved that we will not accept an extension of payments beyond September 2025. We stress that this allowance is a statutory entitlement under our Conditions of Service and an essential resource for advancing research, teaching, and knowledge sharing,” the statement added.
