Thomas Partey Denies All Charges Against Him, Welcomes Opportunity to Clear His Name - Lawyer Jenny Wiltshire
London, England - 5 July, 2025 - Former Arsenal midfielder Thomas Partey has denied all charges of rape and sexual assault leveled against him by the Metropolitan Police, his lawyer confirmed, as the 32-year-old prepares to face trial following a three-year investigation.
Partey, who left Arsenal in June 2025 after his contract expired, was charged on Friday with five counts of rape and one count of sexual assault involving three women, with alleged incidents occurring between 2021 and 2022.
He is scheduled to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on 5 August.
The charges stem from incidents reported to have occurred between 2021 and 2022. The Metropolitan Police began their investigation in February 2022 after receiving an initial report of rape.
The allegations involve two counts of rape against one woman, three counts of rape against a second woman, and one count of sexual assault against a third woman.
Detective Superintendent Andy Furphy, leading the investigation, emphasized that supporting the women who came forward remains the police’s priority. He urged anyone with information related to the case to contact the investigation team via email at [email protected].
Partey’s lawyer, Jenny Wiltshire of Hickman and Rose, issued a statement asserting his innocence: “Thomas Partey denies all the charges against him. He has fully cooperated with the police and CPS throughout their three-year investigation. He now welcomes the opportunity to finally clear his name. Given that there are now ongoing legal proceedings, my client is unable to comment further.”
The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS), which authorized the charges, confirmed that the decision followed a thorough review of evidence. Jaswant Narwal, chief crown prosecutor for CPS London North, stressed the importance of avoiding any reporting or online commentary that could prejudice the active legal proceedings, underscoring Partey’s right to a fair trial.
Partey, who resides in Hertfordshire, joined Arsenal from Atlético Madrid in October 2020 for £45 million.
During his five-year tenure, he made 130 Premier League appearances, scoring nine goals, and became a key figure in Mikel Arteta’s midfield, helping the club secure second place in the Premier League for three consecutive seasons. Despite a hamstring injury limiting him to 14 appearances in the 2023-24 season, he featured in 52 matches in his final campaign with Arsenal, which saw the team reach the Champions League semi-finals and the Carabao Cup semi-finals. Partey also represented Ghana 53 times, scoring 15 goals, including appearances at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
The charges come four days after Partey’s contract with Arsenal ended on 30 June 2025, leaving him a free agent. Arsenal issued a brief statement to the media, noting, “The player’s contract ended on 30 June. Due to ongoing legal proceedings, the club is unable to comment on the case.”
The Football Association and the Premier League also declined to comment when approached by news outlets. The case has sparked significant public interest, with some criticism directed at Arsenal for continuing to play Partey during the investigation. Reports indicate he was first arrested in July 2022, though he was not named publicly at the time and continued to feature for the club while on bail.
Campaigners, including the Arsenal Supporters Against Sexual Violence group, have voiced concerns over the club’s decision to field him, with nearly 9,000 fans signing a letter last year calling for his suspension pending the investigation’s outcome.
