TEWU-GH Declares Indefinite Strike Over Representation Dispute

Accra, Ghana - 3 July, 2025 - The Tertiary Education Workers Union of Ghana (TEWU-GH) has begun an indefinite strike, effective immediately, in response to a dispute over representation on the governing councils of traditional public universities.

The union, in a statement released on July 3, claims that its majority membership and legitimate right to representation have been disregarded by authorities, who have instead recognized a minority union, TEWU-TUC.

TEWU-GH argues that the decision to recognize TEWU-TUC is "egregious and unjustifiable" and disregards democratic principles and the rights of the majority union. The union is demanding the immediate withdrawal of TEWU-TUC's appointment as workers' representative on university governing councils and calls for verification by the Chief Labour Officer to determine which union truly represents the majority of workers.

The strike follows the expiry of a seven-day ultimatum issued by TEWU-GH to relevant authorities on June 24. The union insists that its demands are clear and non-negotiable and has appealed to fellow labour unions, stakeholders, and Ghanaians to stand in solidarity.
