Tamale Teaching Hospital Doctors Go on Strike, Suspend Emergency, Outpatient Services

Tamale, Northern Region- 24 April, 2025 - Doctors at Tamale Teaching Hospital in Ghana have gone on an indefinite strike, suspending emergency and outpatient services in protest over alleged "unwarranted attacks" by Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh and local MP Alhassan Suhuyini.

The strike was announced after an emergency meeting of the Doctors' Association of Tamale Teaching Hospital, where members expressed outrage over comments made during the minister's visit to the hospital's Accident and Emergency Unit.

The doctors are demanding unconditional apologies for the perceived slight and have also presented a list of urgent logistical and infrastructural needs to hospital management, including reliable access to water, stable electricity, and basic clinical supplies.

While inpatient care will continue until patients are safely discharged, the suspension of emergency services is likely to cause significant disruptions to healthcare in the region.

The strike highlights the challenges faced by healthcare workers in Ghana and the need for improved working conditions and respect for medical professionals.

The Doctors' Association in a statement has warned that its members will not operate in hostile environments and has criticized certain media outlets for biased reporting.

The situation remains tense, with the doctors vowing not to resume services until their demands are met.
