Sierra Leone President Julius Maada Bio Elected ECOWAS Chair

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has a new chairman, with Sierra Leone's President Julius Maada Bio taking the helm at a critical juncture for the regional organization.

President Bio's election was confirmed during the 67th Ordinary Summit of ECOWAS in Abuja, Nigeria, where he will serve a one-year term, succeeding Nigerian President Ahmed Bola Tinubu.

As chairman, President Bio will lead ECOWAS through a period of significant challenge, including navigating the region's complex security landscape and addressing the growing threat of terrorism. The bloc is also grappling with the aftermath of Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger's decision to form the Alliance of Sahel States (AES), a move seen as a challenge to ECOWAS' authority.

President Bio brings a wealth of experience to the role, having served as Sierra Leone's military head of state in 1996 before transitioning to civilian leadership. He has been president of Sierra Leone since 2018, winning re-election in 2023. His leadership of ECOWAS will be closely watched, particularly given the internal instability in Sierra Leone, including recent reports of attempted coups and the exile of former President Ernest Bai Koroma.

The Abuja summit, which saw the handover of leadership from President Tinubu to President Bio, was attended by several high-profile leaders, including Ghana's former President John Dramani Mahama.
