Over 1,300 ECG Containers Missing at Tema Port - Report

Tema, Ghana - 26 March, 2025 - A staggering 1,357 containers belonging to the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) have vanished from the Tema Port according to a report, sparking a massive investigation.

The discrepancy came to light when an independent audit, chaired by Prof. Innocent Senyo Acquah, revealed that a significant gap between the ECG's claimed 2,491 uncleared containers and the actual 1,134 containers found at the port.

Minister of Energy and Green Transition, John Abdulai Jinapor, has expressed outrage over the situation, vowing to hold those responsible accountable. “The over 1,300 containers cannot vanish into thin air. We will ensure those responsible are held accountable," he assured.

Initial investigations have uncovered a complex trail of irregularities within the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), including breaches of procurement rules and a glaring lack of accountability. The probe highlighted three critical areas of concern:

- Flawed Contracting: Despite financial constraints, ECG awarded contracts to two companies for container clearance, one of which lacked the requisite license, sparking concerns over procurement irregularities.
- Accountability Gaps: The merger of ECG's procurement directorate with its Housing and Estate unit has raised eyebrows, particularly given the Director of Procurement's lack of prior experience in the field.
- Staggering Financial Fallout: The investigation estimates that the missing containers have racked up a whopping GH₵1.5 billion in liabilities, a staggering burden on the company's finances.

In response to the crisis, Minister Jinapor has pledged to separate ECG's procurement unit within a week and implement urgent reforms to prevent future irregularities. The investigation, launched after the minister's visit to the port in January 2025, is ongoing.
