Mpox Cases Surge to 9 in Ghana, Health Authorities on High Alert

Accra, Ghana - 23 May, 2025 - Ghana's health authorities have confirmed a surge in Mpox cases, with the total number rising to nine following the detection of two new infections in Accra in May 2025.

This development comes after the initial cases were reported earlier in the month, prompting the Ghana Health Service (GHS) and the Ministry of Health to ramp up public health measures.

The new cases, which have no known link to the earlier confirmed infections, suggest multiple transmission pathways, underscoring the need for enhanced vigilance and robust response strategies.

The GHS has activated emergency protocols, including aggressive contact tracing and community surveillance, to limit further transmission. Mpox, which typically presents with symptoms such as rash, fever, and swollen lymph nodes, poses serious health risks, particularly in vulnerable populations.

Ghana had previously reported 34 confirmed cases between June 2022 and November 2023, with no endemic presence of the virus prior to the 2022 outbreak.

The current resurgence has prompted calls for improved detection and response measures to curb the spread of the disease.
