Missing Containers: Energy Minister Seeks AG's Help to Uncover Truth

Accra, Ghana - 02 April, 2025 - Ghana's Energy Minister, John Jinapor, has formally requested the Attorney General to spearhead a thorough investigation into the disappearance of over 1,300 ECG containers from Tema Port, amid a widening scandal over mismanagement and corruption in the energy sector.
In a an interview with journalists in Accra, Jinapor revealed that he has formally requested the Attorney General to spearhead a thorough investigation, potentially paving the way for court action against those found responsible.
“We’ve written to the Attorney General to conduct further investigation with the possibility of taking culprits to court,”
Mr. Jinapor has also involved the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) in the investigation, tasking them with locating the missing containers.
“We’ve also written to NIB to institute proper investigation to determine the whereabouts of the containers,” he stated, underscoring the need for a thorough inquiry.
Additionally, the minister disclosed that he has reached out to the National Security Secretariat to secure the remaining containers and prevent further losses.
“I have also personally written to the National Security Secretariat to help us secure the remaining containers so that we can do a proper reconciliation of the containers,” he said.
Meanwhile, National Security operatives have arrested 14 individuals, including 12 Chinese nationals and two Ghanaians, in connection with the missing containers.
The authorities have vowed to pursue those responsible and recover the stolen cables, which were allegedly melted into aluminum rods for export.
