Minority Caucus Slams Gov't Over Delayed Payments to Local Contractors

Accra, Ghana - 08 June, 2025 - The Minority caucus in Ghana's Parliament has expressed deep concerns over the government's alleged prioritization of payments to foreign contractors over local ones, citing it as a major economic injustice.

According to Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin, the government's delays in releasing funds for payments to local contractors have had severe consequences, including widespread layoffs and business closures.

Afenyo-Markin emphasized that the issue extends beyond the contractors themselves, affecting workers, families, and dependents, and ultimately contributing to increased unemployment and economic hardship.

“When the contractors are not paid, it is not just about them, the workers, the effect on creating more unemployment and the livelihood of the family and dependents. These are matters that must be of concern to us. The cascading effects of these non-payments are very profound, and we all know as a house,” he stressed.

The Minority caucus has called on the Finance Minister to urgently address the issue and ensure that local contractors receive the payments they are owed. However, Minister for Roads and Highways Kwame Governs Agbodza has assured that local contractors will be paid, including those in the Minority Leader's constituency. "We are going to pay contractors, including contractors in the Minority Leader's constituency. The only thing is that you are good at identifying contractors who haven't been paid, but you forget to pay them all the time. I can guarantee you, the contractors will be paid," he said.
