A piece of music history was sold at auction in France on Wednesday, as a single glittery sock worn by Michael Jackson during his 1997 HIStory World Tour concert fetched a staggering €7,688 ($8,822). The sock, adorned with sparkling rhinestones, was a distinctive part of Jackson's stage attire during the tour.

The auctioneer, Aurore Illy, described the sock as a "cult object" for Michael Jackson fans, highlighting its exceptional value. Despite being decades old and showing visible signs of wear, including stains and yellowed rhinestones, the sock's historical significance and connection to the King of Pop drove up its price far beyond the initial estimate of €3,000 to €4,000 ($3,400-$4,500).

The sock was discovered discarded near Jackson's dressing room after a concert in Nîmes, southern France, in July 1997. A technician found the item and preserved it, along with a backstage pass, in a frame. Today, the sock remains a prized collectible, symbolizing Jackson's enduring legacy.

The sock is believed to have been worn during high-energy performances of hits like "Billie Jean" and "They Don’t Care About Us". Jackson's iconic style, including his glittery white socks, has been emulated by fans worldwide.

The sale of Jackson's sock is not an isolated incident. Other Michael Jackson memorabilia have fetched impressive prices at auctions. For instance, a glittery glove worn by Jackson during his first "moonwalk" in 1983 was sold for $350,000 in 2009. A hat he wore before that performance sold for over $80,000 in Paris in 2023.

Despite controversy surrounding his personal life, Michael Jackson's legacy as the King of Pop remains unchallenged. His music, style, and performances continue to inspire new generations of artists and fans. The sale of his sock serves as a testament to his enduring impact on popular culture.
