Mahama says Akufo-Addo's shift in tone reveals NPP's fear of losing
Biakoye,Oti Region, Ghana - Nov 4,2024 - The National Democratic Congress's (NDC) flagbearer John Dramani Mahama has interpreted President Nana Akufo-Addo's recent commitment to a peaceful transition as a sign that the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) may be facing defeat in the upcoming December 7 elections.
Speaking at a campaign rally in Biakoye, Oti Region, on November 4, Mahama noted that Akufo-Addo's pledge to hand over power to whoever wins the election marks a shift in tone, implying the President is preparing for a potential loss.
Mahama views this as more than just a democratic assurance, but rather an implicit acknowledgement of the NPP's dwindling chances.
Mahama emphasized that the NDC's focus on accountability sets it apart from the NPP. "We will go after all who have stolen from the public purse," he stated, suggesting that Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the NPP's presidential candidate, cannot hold individuals accountable due to his own ties.
“The reason you must vote for the NDC is that we will go after all who have stolen from the public purse. Dr Bawumia cannot hold them accountable. That was why he said he would not hand over power to me.
“But recently, I heard him say he will hand over power to whoever wins. It is just because he knows that the NPP is about to lose the election. He knows that John Dramani Mahama is coming back to the Jubilee House,'' he stated.
Recent polls have shown a close contest between Mahama and Bawumia, with some indicating Mahama's lead in key regions and among crucial voter demographics. The economy, jobs, and education are top concerns for voters, with 62% believing Ghana is heading in the wrong direction.
