Mahama Names Gideon Hammond as New NSA Deputy Director General

Accra, Ghana - 21 March, 2025 -  President John Dramani Mahama has appointed Gideon Hammond as the new Deputy Director General of the National Sports Authority (NSA), in a move aimed at revitalizing Ghana's sports ecosystem.

The announcement came on the eve of the Black Stars' crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying match against Chad at the Accra Sports Stadium.

Hammond, a seasoned sports administrator with over 15 years of experience, is tasked with driving infrastructural improvements, talent development, and administrative reforms within the NSA. His appointment is seen as a strategic step by President Mahama to address the challenges facing Ghanaian sports, particularly following the Black Stars' failure to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

The NSA has been facing significant challenges, including ageing infrastructure and funding constraints, which have hindered the country's sporting ambitions. Hammond's track record in grassroots sports development has elicited optimism among Ghanaians, who see his appointment as a positive step towards reviving the country's sports ecosystem.

Hammond will work closely with Yaw Ampofo Ankrah, the newly appointed Director General of the NSA, to drive the organization's objectives forward.

As Ghana prepares to face Chad in the World Cup qualifiers, the appointment of Hammond is seen as a timely boost to the country's sports sector.
