Mahama Mourns Texas Flood Victims in Message to Trump
Accra, Ghana - 11 July, 2025 - Ghana's President John Dramani Mahama has extended heartfelt condolences to U.S. President Donald Trump following catastrophic floods in Central Texas on July 4, 2025, which killed at least 111 people, displaced thousands, and caused extensive damage to infrastructure.
In a formal letter dated July 8, Mahama expressed solidarity with the U.S., particularly mourning the loss of life, including children, and the ongoing search for missing individuals in the hardest-hit areas of Kerr, Travis, Hays, and Williamson counties.
The disaster, one of the deadliest in Texas history, has prompted global sympathy and scrutiny of U.S. preparedness amid controversial federal budget cuts. The floods, triggered by torrential rains dumping up to 15 inches in hours, caused the Guadalupe River to surge 26 feet in under an hour, devastating communities and sweeping away structures, including parts of Camp Mystic, a century-old Christian girls’ summer camp in Kerr County, where 10 campers and one counselor remain missing.
Reuters reported that over 850 people were rescued, with first responders navigating treacherous conditions, including snake-infested waters, to search for survivors. The death toll, exceeding 111 across six counties, includes at least 28 children, with Kerr County alone recording 40 adult and 28 child fatalities.
Texas Governor Greg Abbott, who toured the area on July 5, pledged continued efforts to locate the missing, while Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick, acting in Abbott’s absence, coordinated with federal officials.
Mahama’s letter conveyed Ghana’s sorrow and praised Trump’s leadership and the efforts of emergency personnel, local authorities, and volunteers working under challenging circumstances.
“We are particularly saddened by the fact that many persons remain missing. On behalf of the Government and people of the Republic of Ghana, and in my own name, I extend our heartfelt condolences to Your Excellency, the Government, and the people of the United States of America, especially the bereaved families and all those affected by this tragic calamity,” the letter said.
“Ghana stands in full solidarity with the Government and people of the United States during this moment of grief and national mourning. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all.''
