Let the records reflect that the NPP Minority staged a walkout - Xavier Sosu
Accra, Ghana - October 23, 2024 - The Member of Parliament for Madina, Francis-Xavier Sosu, sparked a controversy in Parliament on Tuesday when he drew attention to an error in the minutes of the previous sitting.
Sosu insisted that the records incorrectly identified the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Caucus as the Majority in Parliament.
Sosu argued that since the NPP caucus abandoned proceedings on Thursday, they had effectively become the minority side of the house. He demanded that the record be corrected to reflect this change.
"Mr Speaker, I also want to draw your attention to paragraph five. The ending statement which is 'Majority Caucus'.
"Mr Speaker, I think the true intention would be reflected if we say that the ‘Minority Caucus staged a walkout’ instead of the ‘Majority Caucus’, so if the correction can be made to reflect that," he said.
Context
The Supreme Court's ruling on October 18 directed Parliament to recognize the affected MPs and allow them to perform their duties until the court delivers its final verdict. This move was in response to Majority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin's court challenge to the Speaker's decision to declare the seats vacant.
