Hooliganism Drives Sponsors Away from Ghana Football - Kwesi Nyantakyi

Accra, Ghana - 23 June, 2025 - Kwesi Nyantakyi, former President of the Ghana Football Association, has sounded the alarm on the devastating impact of hooliganism on the country's domestic game.

In a candid interview featured in the JoySports documentary "Scars of Hooliganism," Nyantakyi warned that ongoing fan violence is scaring away potential sponsors, thereby crippling the financial prospects of Ghana's Premier League.

The absence of a headline sponsor since betPawa's departure in November 2023 has left clubs and the league body struggling to secure alternative funding. Nyantakyi attributed this predicament to the persistent acts of violence at match venues, which have tarnished the league's reputation and deterred corporate sponsors.

"When violence takes center stage in footballing issues in the country, it drives away sponsors," Nyantakyi emphasized. "A lot of people don't want to associate themselves with bad brands tainted with violence and illegality."

He added that violence has no place in the game, and its prevalence is severely damaging the commercial value of Ghana's domestic football.

“Violence has no place at all in the game.''
