Helicopter Disaster: Black Box Found at Crash Site - Ashanti Regional Minister Confirms
Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr. Frank Amoakohene, braved the dense forest terrain at Sikaman Brofoyedu in the Adansi Akrofuom District, near Obuasi, as he led a team to the accident scene.

 

Ashanti Region, Ghana – 7 August, 2025 -The Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr. Frank Amoakohene has disclosed that the crucial black box from the Ghana Armed Forces Z-9 helicopter that crashed on Wednesday has been successfully recovered.

Dr. Amoakohene in a Facebook post on Thursday, August 7, mentioned that a collaborative effort between investigators from the Ghana Air Force, other military units, local residents, and the Assembly Member for the area led to the discovery of the device in the dense forest terrain where the crash occurred. This significant breakthrough is expected to shed light on the cause of the tragic incident that claimed eight lives, including high-ranking government officials and military personnel. 

The recovery of the black box is a vital step in the investigation, which aims to determine the sequence of events leading to the crash.

The devastating military helicopter crash claimed the lives of eight high-ranking government and military officials in the Ashanti Region on Wednesday, August 6. The Ghana Armed Forces Z-9 helicopter went off radar while en route to Obuasi, prompting a swift search and rescue operation.

Meanwhile, samples of the remains of the eight individuals who perished have been flown to South Africa for DNA analysis to aid in their identification.

The government has declared three days of national mourning, with all state flags ordered to fly at half-mast in honor of the victims. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, August 9, at 5 p.m. at the forecourt of the State House, followed by a state funeral on Friday, August 15, at the Black Star Square.
