Government to Launch One Million Coders Programme on April 16
Accra, Ghana - 14 April, 2025 - Ghana's Minister for Communications, Digital Technology and Innovation, Samuel Nartey George, has announced the launch of the One Million Coders programme, a flagship initiative aimed at equipping one million Ghanaians with in-demand digital skills.
The programme, part of the government's efforts to drive economic growth through innovation, will pilot in Greater Accra, Ashanti, Bono, and Upper East regions starting April 16, 2025.
The programme, a key campaign promise made by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) during the 2024 election, seeks to empower Ghanaians with skills necessary to compete in the global business process outsourcing (BPO) and knowledge process outsourcing (KPO) sectors.
The programme offers a comprehensive curriculum with various specialized courses, including Certified Cybersecurity Professional, Certified Network Support Technician, Data Analyst Associate, and Certified Data Protection Practitioner, among others. Participants will undergo an online aptitude test after registration, and successful candidates will be shortlisted for final admission.
At a press briefing on Wednesday, April 9, in Accra, Sam George disclosed that the government has allocated GHC 100 million towards the implementation of the programme, which will be piloted across four key regions in Ghana: Accra, Kumasi, Sunyani, and Bolgatanga.
He also noted that over 500 participants from Accra, Bolgatanga, Sunyani, and Kumasi are expected to attend the launch event. The programme, according to him, is designed with inclusivity in mind, featuring a balanced 50-50 gender split.
“We will leverage our district assemblies and community information centres in subsequent implementation phases to ensure that the programme reaches every corner of Ghana, not just the urban centres,” he added.

He added that the Ministry has worked tirelessly to secure partnerships and resources for the One Million Coders program through strategic diplomacy and public-private partnerships. Notably, a significant Memorandum of Understanding was signed with the MTN Group in Barcelona, alongside other agreements with local and international partners.
According to him, these partnerships aim to support the program's implementation, aligning with Ghana's goal of becoming Africa's premier digital talent hub.
“These initiatives are designed to support the implementation of the One Million Coders programme, all aligned with our commitment to positioning Ghana as Africa’s premier digital talent hub,” he added.
This initiative is particularly timely, given the projected shortage of cybersecurity talent, expected to reach 85 million workers globally by 2030. Ghana's One Million Coders programme aims to bridge this gap and position the country for success in the rapidly evolving digital landscape.
