Government Seeking Partners to Revive National Airline - Transport Minister

Accra, Ghana -08 April, 2025 - The Ghanaian government has renewed its efforts to establish a national airline, with Minister for Transport Joseph Bukari Nikpe announcing plans to partner with private investors to bring the project to life.
According to him, despite the country's economic challenges, the government is determined to revive the national airline, which has been defunct for nearly two decades.
The countryhas had two national airlines; Ghana Airways (1958-2004) and Ghana International Airlines (2005-2010), both of which eventually ceased operations. Since then, the country has relied on private airlines to meet its aviation needs. However, with the growing demand for air travel and the need to boost economic development, the government has decided to revive plans for a national airline.
Minister Nikpe revealed that a shortlist of potential partners will soon be revealed, with the government seeking to collaborate with experienced airlines or investors to establish a sustainable and profitable national carrier.
“You are aware that we inherited an economy that is challenged, and for now, we cannot establish a national airline. So we are looking for a partnership. You know, when it comes to partnership, it will take time. We have to know who they are to partner with you to bring in a national carrier that will fly for a very long time,” he remarked during a meeting with the staff of the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority.
