Government Donates ₵1m to Kantamanto Market Fire Victims

Accra, Ghana - 23 Jan, 2025 - A donation of one million cedis has been made by the Ghanaian government to support traders affected by the Kantamanto Market fire in Accra. The blaze, which occurred on January 2, 2025, destroyed over 7,000 shops and impacted approximately 30,000 traders.

President John Dramani Mahama, through the Chief of Staff and senior officials, pledged the support during a meeting with representatives from the Kantamanto Traders Association. The government expressed its commitment to rebuilding the market, with plans to create a modern, multi-purpose facility.

The Chief of Staff emphasized the importance of collaboration in redesigning the market, ensuring improved access and security measures to prevent similar incidents.

Rev. Opoku Afreh, Chairman of the Kantamanto Traders Association, expressed gratitude for the government's support and revealed ongoing negotiations with ACCESS Bank for a $100 million loan to construct a modern market.
