Delaware, US – Ghana is bolstering its trade ties with the US by exploring a potential partnership between Tema Port and the Port of Wilmington in Delaware.

This strategic collaboration seeks to boost trade connectivity, enhance logistics capacity, and expand market access for Ghanaian exports to the US market, capitalizing on existing trade agreements like the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA).

This partnership aligns with Ghana's efforts to diversify its trade partnerships and leverage the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) to strengthen its economic foundation and reduce vulnerability to external shocks. By positioning itself as a strategic hub for trade and investment, Ghana aims to attract international investors and boost its economic development.

Ghana's push for stronger trade ties was showcased at the 14th Annual Pan-African Global Trade and Investment Conference in Delaware. During the event, Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa delivered a keynote speech, highlighting Ghana's eagerness to form partnerships that promote economic growth and reinforce Pan-African unity.

Additionally, Ablakwa held discussions with Delaware Governor Matt Meyer, exploring opportunities to enhance bilateral collaboration and improve maritime connections.

The partnership is expected to position Tema Port as a strategic hub for trans-Atlantic trade, boosting Ghana's economic growth and increasing its competitiveness in the region. By leveraging deep-water facilities, advanced digital technologies, and integrated transport networks, Ghana can create a resilient and future-ready maritime hub that meets the complexities of modern global commerce.

The conference brought together policymakers, development partners, and business leaders to explore strategies for enhancing Africa's role in global commerce and investment. Ghana's participation reinforced its strategy to attract international partnerships and leverage its role as host of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) Secretariat to drive regional and global integration.

Ghana's maritime development is part of a broader strategy to transform the country into a major economic hub in West Africa. With its prime location along major global shipping lanes, the country is well-positioned to attract international trade and investment. Ghana is actively developing deep-water ports capable of accommodating ultra-large container vessels, integrating state-of-the-art cargo handling and digital tracking systems.

This development comes on the heels of recent discussions between Ghanaian and US officials aimed at deepening trade cooperation between the two countries. The US has expressed its commitment to increasing bilateral trade and investment with Ghana, with potential opportunities for partnerships in various sectors.
