Accra, Ghana - Nov 11, 2024 - The Ghana Medical Association (GMA) has raised concerns about alarming rates of alcohol misuse, drug abuse, and sexual misconduct among some of its members.

At the GMA's annual general meeting, President Dr. Frank Serebour emphasized that such behavior compromises patient care and puts the medical profession at risk.

Dr. Serebour revealed that the association faces multiple lawsuits due to allegations of medical and professional negligence, highlighting the urgent need for corrective action.

He noted that health personnel struggling with alcoholism and drug abuse have impaired quality of life, affecting their work.

Rising Concerns:

- Alcohol and Drug Abuse: Health personnel's substance abuse impacts patient care and their overall well-being.
- Sexual Misconduct: Severe cases of sexual harassment by health workers are under review by the Medical and Dental Council.
- Unprofessional Practices: Chronic lateness, absenteeism, and insufficient work hours undermine professionalism in the health sector.

Dr. Serebour criticized these unprofessional practices, questioning whether greed and selfishness have become pervasive. He cited instances of health workers expecting full-day pay despite working only half-days.

“We have some health personnel involved in alcoholism and drug abuse, which impacts their quality of life,” he stated.

“In some cases, we are left off the hook simply because the victims of our unprofessionalism choose to blame the witches and wizards instead of taking on the system.”

"Is there an overwhelming focus on greed and selfishness? Some workers arrive at 9:00 a.m. and leave by noon, expecting to be paid for a full day," he added.
