A devastating shooting incident in Nyankpala, Northern Region, has marred Ghana's December 7 elections, resulting in one fatality and one injury. The National Peace Council (NPC) has vehemently condemned this egregious act, reiterating its unwavering commitment to peaceful elections.

In a joint statement with the West Africa Network for Peacebuilding (WANEP) and other partners, the NPC expressed profound sympathy for the victims' families and the affected community. The Council firmly denounced electoral violence, emphasizing that such acts are unacceptable and undermine Ghana's democratic progress.

The NPC urged all stakeholders to uphold peace and stability throughout the voting period, reminding them of the commitment made by political parties during the signing of the 4th Presidential Elections Peace Pact.

At a media briefing, the Council revealed that four individuals have been arrested in connection with the incident, which left one person dead and several others injured.

“We are saddened by the loss of life and extend our heartfelt condolences to the families affected and the Nyankpala community.

"This incident is unacceptable, and we strongly condemn any act of violence tied to the electoral process,” the Chairman of the Governing board of the Council, Rev Ernest Adu-Gyamfi, stated.

This pact, signed on November 28, 2024, saw party leaders pledge to promote a peaceful environment before, during, and after the elections.
