Don't be partisan - Speaker Bagnin to New MPs
Accra, Ghana - 12 Jan, 2025 - Ghana's Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has urged newly elected Members of Parliament to prioritize the nation's interests above partisan politics. Speaking at an orientation event in Accra, Bagbin emphasized the need for MPs to focus on addressing Ghana's challenges, rather than being swayed by party affiliations.
Bagbin cautioned that excessive partisanship can lead to a fleeting rise to power, only to be followed by a collapse in relevance once the political landscape shifts. In contrast, politicians who put the nation first tend to enjoy longer-term success in their careers.
“I want to urge you to stay focused and work assiduously towards addressing the challenges facing our nation. That is the number one, not the [political] party [or] the nation. It is very critical and those of you who are not observant please refocus,” He stated.
“Those who really take Ghana first advance in politics than those who are extremely partisan. When you are extremely partisan you may ascend in a regime but in the next one you will collapse because you are seen to identify yourself with one personality who may be the leader so after that leader you are not relevant again,” Bagbin added.
The Speaker's comments come as Ghana's new parliamentary session gets underway, with many expecting lawmakers to tackle pressing issues facing the nation.
