Digitalization Key to Africa's Economic Transformation - Bawumia

Havard University, Boston - 16 Feb, 2025 - African policymakers must harness technology to drive economic transformation and leapfrog advanced nations, Ghana's former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has urged, citing the continent's vast potential for growth and development.
Speaking at Harvard University's 27th Annual Conference, Dr. Bawumia emphasized the need for a mindset shift, embracing digitalization to accelerate development and create jobs.
Dr. Bawumia highlighted Ghana's economic evolution, transitioning from an informal system to a formal, data-driven economy capable of competing in the Fourth Industrial Revolution.
He stressed the importance of leveraging technology to solve current problems and lay the foundation for future growth.
“Policymakers must act with a mindset of possibilities. We should embrace technology and not be intimidated by it. We must believe that we can leapfrog advanced nations in many areas if we put our minds to it,” he stated.
“Today, we are building formal systems and a database-driven economy to compete in the Fourth Industrial Revolution. Our challenge is to use digitalization to solve current problems while laying the foundation for future jobs, leapfrogging from the Second to the Fourth Industrial Revolution,” he added.
