Decongestion Exercise Won't Be a Nine-Day Wonder - Accra Mayor

Accra, Ghana - 20 May, 2025 - The Accra Metropolitan Assembly has launched a decongestion exercise in the city's Central Business District, with Mayor Michael Kpakpo Allotey reiterating his administration's commitment to restoring order in the area.

According to the Mayor, the exercise is not a one-off event, but a prolonged campaign to reclaim public spaces and restore discipline in the capital.

The initiative, launched by the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) in collaboration with the Korle Klottey Municipal Assembly (KoKMA), aims to remove unauthorized structures and street obstructions, improve pedestrian and vehicular movement, and enhance public safety.

The exercise, which began earlier in the day, is focused on key areas of the city, including Kinbu Road, ECG Junction, and Opera Square, known hotspots for street vending and traffic congestion.

“This exercise is not a nine-day wonder;'' " the Mayor stated. ''We are on the street till we make sure that the roads are clear. We are not done. For the next hour, we are going back to the street. From here we are going to Circle, and if there is more strength, we will go to Kaneshie. Then we continue tomorrow,” the Mayor stated.

The decongestion campaign forms part of a broader effort to improve the city's infrastructure and services, with city authorities maintaining that it is a strategic step toward restoring public safety and discipline in the capital.

The AMA and KoKMA are working together to ensure the success of the initiative, which is expected to have a positive impact on the lives of residents and visitors alike.
