Court Halts Teshie Homowo Celebrations
Accra,Ghana - In a bid to restore peace, the Ghana Police Service has obtained a court injunction against the Teshie Traditional Council and six other parties, effectively banning all outdoor activities associated with the Homowo Festival, except for traditional rituals.
The move comes after violent confrontations during the festival's Kpokpoi sprinkling ceremony left three people dead, including a child, and several others injured.
The Accra High Court, Criminal Division, issued the injunction, halting all outdoor and public events for this year's Teshie Homowo Festival. The court's ruling aims to prevent further violence and ensure public safety.
The clashes, which occurred between the Gbugblah and Lenshie clans, prompted the Municipal Security Council (MUSEC) to engage with stakeholders and agree on guidelines for the remaining activities. However, due to the situation's escalation, the police deemed it necessary to secure the injunction to preserve public peace and safety.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) Obed Dzikunu, Deputy Greater Accra Regional Commander, urged the youth to comply with the court order, emphasizing that public peace and safety take precedence over any interests. Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Emmanuel Baah, Kpeshie Divisional Commander, also admonished residents to obey the restraining order, stating that the decision was in the best interest of the community.
The police have also warned that anyone found violating the directives will be arrested and prosecuted.
