CAF Doubles WAFCON Winner's Prize Money to $1 Million as Tournament Begins Today

Rabat, Morocco - 5 July, 2025 - The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has announced a significant boost to the prize money for the upcoming Women's Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco, doubling the winner’s purse to $1 million, a 100% increase from the previous edition.

The total prize pool for the tournament has also been increased by 45% to $3.475 million.

CAF President Dr. Patrice Motsepe said the increase is part of the organization's commitment to developing and growing women's football in Africa.

He highlighted the improving quality and standard of women's football on the continent, describing it as "world class."

Motsepe expressed optimism about the tournament's growing fanbase, broadcasting reach, and sponsorship interest, predicting it would be "enormously successful."

“CAF is continuing with its commitment to the development and growth of Women’s Football in Africa,'' he stated.

“The 100% increase in the Prize Money of the Winner of the TotalEnergies CAF WAFCON Morocco 2024 and the 45% total increase in the Prize Money of this Competition should contribute to the increase of the salaries of Women Football players, coaches and employees.''

“The quality and standard of Women’s Football in Africa is consistently improving and is world class.''

“We are excited about the substantial increase in the number of fans, broadcasting viewers and sponsors in the TotalEnergies CAF WAFCON Morocco 2024. This Competition is going to be enormously successful,'' he added.

The prize money breakdown is as follows:
- Winner: $1 million
- Runner-up: $500,000
- Third place: $350,000
- Fourth place: $300,000
- Quarter-finalists: $200,000 each
- Third in group: $150,000
- Fourth in group: $125,000 each

The increased prize money is expected to contribute to better salaries for women football players, coaches, and staff, further professionalizing the sport on the continent.

WAFCON 2024 kicks off on July 5, with host nation Morocco taking on Zambia.

Ghana's Black Queens will face defending champions South Africa in their opening game on July 7.
