Tema, Ghana - 01 June, 2025 - Ghana and Brazil have embarked on a significant naval cooperation initiative with the arrival of the Brazilian Navy's Guinex V Defender, a frigate-class warship, at the Port of Tema.

The vessel's four-day visit marks a crucial step in strengthening maritime security and fostering bilateral relations between the two nations.

The Guinex V Defender's arrival on May 31, 2025, is part of a broader effort to enhance training opportunities for Ghanaian naval officers. The joint military exercises with the Ghanaian Navy aim to improve operational coordination, strengthen bilateral relations, and facilitate the exchange of best practices in maritime defense.

According to Her Excellency Mariana Madeira, Brazilian Ambassador to Ghana, the vessel's visit represents a significant milestone in naval diplomacy between the two countries. She emphasized that the ship serves as a "floating embassy," symbolizing the strengthening of ties between Ghana and Brazil.

“It means a lot to strengthen the ties between our countries because it’s naval diplomacy. Through this ship, we are actually in Ghana in a floating embassy. We expect that this exercise, Guinex V, will bring our countries together through themes like security in the Gulf of Guinea, capacity building of our navies, and dialogue between the two sides,” she noted

The Guinex V Defender, equipped with advanced self-defense systems, is designed to operate in high-threat environments and defend against external attacks. During its stay, the ship's crew will engage in joint exercises with the Ghanaian Navy, focusing on areas such as boarding procedures, ship inspections, communication, and navigation.

According to Commanding Officer Awmeida Matos, building the capacity of Ghanaian naval officers is key to boosting safety at sea.

“With this fifth edition of the Guinex V operation, we aim to build capacity in areas such as boarding procedures, ship inspections, communication, and navigation. We are here in Ghana, in Tema, to improve these capabilities and strengthen our personnel to better address maritime challenges,” he said.
